Correction as of Mon., Sept. 18, 2023: Cory Fleming’s prison sentence is 13 years and 10 months, not 20 years as previously reported.
Cory Fleming, the former attorney who pleaded guilty to financial crimes related to the wrongful death of Gloria Satterfield, was sentenced today to 13 years and 10 months in state prison. The sentence was handed down by Judge Clifton Newman who calls Fleming’s case “unprecedented” and “the greatest crime for a lawyer” in South Carolina history.
Attorneys Eric Bland and Ronnie Richter represent the Satterfield family.
“Today the rule of law prevailed. What the world saw at the sentencing of Cory Fleming is that our justice system is intact. Mr. Fleming was given every opportunity to state his case for a sentence that would coexist with the 46 months he was given by Judge Gergel in federal court last month. Judge Newman listened to the victims as well as the arguments advanced by the state. He pronounced a just proportionate and fair sentence for the crimes in which Mr. Fleming pled guilty to. The foundation of our justice system remains strong. The Satterfield’s feel like justice was done in connection with Cory Fleming’s crimes committed against the estate of Gloria Satterfield and her sons.”
