Charleston, SC – Today, Tuesday, November 10, 2015, Bland Richter, LLP of Columbia and Charleston, have filed a complaint in the US District Court of South Carolina on behalf of Officer Michael Slager against the Southern States Police Benevolent Association, Inc.
The Southern States Police Benevolent Association, Inc. (“Southern States PBA”) is a corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of Florida which transacts business within the State of South Carolina. Among its business activities in the State of South Carolina, it issues policies of insurance, which insure police officers within the State of South Carolina.
For years preceding the shooting death of Walter Scott, Michael Slager paid for an insurance policy issued by the Southern States Police Benevolent Society which promised to provide him with a legal defense in the event of an officer related shooting while serving in his capacity as a police officer.
“Despite the fact that Slager is presumed innocent until proven guilty and the fact that the trial of the Slager matter has yet to be scheduled, just four days after the shooting death of Walter Scott, Southern States PBA terminated Slager’s coverage,” says Ronald L. Richter, Jr., attorney of Bland Richter, LLP.
“Today, Michael Slager has filed an action in the Federal District Court in Charleston, South Carolina which seeks redress for the actions of Southern States PBA which have placed the entire Slager family in financial jeopardy.”
